You know how much I love my bread recipes. There is something about taking a fresh, homemade dough and turning it into a perfectly delicious treat that just calls to me!

You can smell it cooking and rising, and it just makes me feel like a domestic goddess to create something beautiful and tasty from scratch.

So when we mix homemade bread sticks with pizza night, it’s one of the best things. Everyone loves a bread stick appetizer on pizza night, especially me.

And when that appetizer is this Little Caesar crazy bread recipe, you almost don’t even need pizza. Almost.

What’s crazy bread?

It’s the bread sticks served at the Little Caesar’s pizza restaurant chain.

This is a copy cat little caesars crazy bread recipe. It is so delicious, and I think it’s even better than the original.

What ingredients are in crazy bread?

  • Instant Dry Yeast: you can use instant or rapid rise, just make sure it’s fresh so you get a nice, fluffy breadstick
  • Warm Water: this activates the yeast to make the dough rise
  • White Sugar: this feeds the yeast and helps it grow
  • Salt: this makes the bread taste better; it’s a magical ingredient that will make a big difference in all bread recipes
  • Bread Flour: this has more protein than all purpose which will give you bread without big pockets of air bubbles
  • Butter: melted butter is brushed on top of the finished bread sticks for flavor and to help the cheese stick
  • Parmesan Cheese: you want the powdered kind, not the long shredded pieces
  • Marinara Sauce: we call this crazy sauce when we serve it with this crazy bread recipe.

Pro Tip: I really prefer using bread flour to make breads. It really does make a difference in the finished product.

If you are a use all-purpose flour for everything cook, try an experiment and see which one you prefer in this crazy bread recipe. You might be surprised!

How to make crazy bread:

  1. Proof the yeast.
  2. Add salt and oil and mix well.
  3. Add flour 1 cup at a time, then knead 5 more minutes by hand or in a machine with a dough hook.
  4. Roll dough out and cut into bread sticks with a pizza cutter.
  5. Lay crazy bread on a lined baking sheet, cover, and rest.
  6. Bake, remove, and spread melted butter and cheese on top.
  7. Serve with your favorite marinara dipping sauce!

Pro Tip: I always line my cookie sheet with parchment paper before laying the bread sticks on. Even if your dough is a little sticky, it won’t stick to the paper. That means there will be less time cleaning the cookie sheets and more time eating nice, warm bread sticks.

A silicone mat also works great and is reusable which is a good thing.

Can you make a stuffed crazy bread recipe?

Yes, but it will take some practice to end up with the shape you want and not have cheese exploding out.

Just follow the recipe as written, and when you are rolling out the dough, roll it out thinner. Then cut them into wide bread sticks; wider than you think they should be.

Then take a piece of mozzarella cheese and wrap the pizza dough around the cheese stick and seal the edges. You want to make sure the ends are tightly shut.

That’s why Little Caesar’s pizza restaurants have a crimped edge to their stuffed crazy bread; they don’t want the cheese to leak out!

Then let it rest and once the oven is ready place your risen dough sheets in the oven to cook up some delicious flavors.

Is crazy bread vegan?

No. My crazy bread recipe uses melted butter and parmesan cheese as the topping which means it is not vegan.

The crazy bread Little Caesars makes also uses parmesan. But you can buy a vegan version from the store that doesn’t sprinkle their crazy bread with cheese.

So if you have a vegan garlic butter sauce you like, you can spread it over these and have your own vegan homemade breadsticks.

Can dogs eat crazy bread?

Yes. There is nothing harmful in this crazy bread recipe

But if you are planning to serve them to your dog, I recommend skipping the buttery cheese topping. Just give your pup a plain breadstick.

How to store crazy bread:

Store them wrapped tightly. You can also freeze them to eat another time, but the texture of the bread will not be as fresh or soft as when you make this crazy bread recipe fresh.

Do I need to refrigerate crazy bread?

Yes. Usually we do not recommend putting bread in the fridge because it can dry it out. But since this is covered in butter and parmesan cheese, it will keep best in the fridge.

Just be sure to eat leftovers within one or two days.

Can I freeze crazy bread?

Yes! This ‘Lil Ceasars crazy bread recipe can be frozen. Just let it cool completely, then wrap it, bag it, and put it in the freezer. For best results we suggest eating it within 3 months of freezing.

Let it thaw in the fridge overnight then reheat in the oven for a couple minutes until heated through.

Give it another coating of butter and parmesan to freshen it up before serving.
